What is Gnosis?

Gnosis is knowledge; knowledge that is got by our own direct personal experience; particularly knowledge of the spirit, the "Being". It is not about believing nor disbelieving, but practice and experience. For example, we may receive Gnostic knowledge in an enlightened type of dream, or whilst meditating. It may be a deep realisation that comes to us whilst we are seriously reflecting on a particular topic or on our life, or it may be just a knowing, an intuition.

The Being and the Esoteric Path

Gnosis is knowledge: experiential knowledge; More than an occasional experience, Gnosis is a path: the path to self-realisation. The experiences of a greater Truth guide us to a particular goal. It is the "Middle Path" of the Buddha, the Tao, or "Way" of Chinese Taoism. It is the "Straight and Narrow" path of Christianity, the climb back up the "Tree of Life" of the Hebrew Kabala: the way back to that from which we originally came.

This path is our own life, the way we live it daily. The goal and greater guide on this path is our own Inner Being - our "Inner Self". Each one of us has our own Being. The experience of our Being is the experience of the Truth, a Greater Reality, Divinity. Any true happiness and knowledge that we can possess comes via our Being. We live daily in a state which in India is known as 'Maya': illusion: feeling separated from nature and other people. Our Inner Being is our real inner Nature, in which we experience the interconnectedness of ourself with spirit, Man and Nature.

The goal of the Gnostic schools is to get the student onto their own path. With this in mind the school gives the necessary keys for awakening our consciousness here and now, and in the inner world that we normally label 'Astral' or 'Dream' World.

In the Gnostic teaching there are 3 basic factors for awakening consciousness.

1 Psychological work. It means to get to know ourselves, our own mind, and our personality, to rid ourselves of the mechanical ego.

2 Alchemy. It is a mystical work to transmute and look after our energies; to awaken powers and faculties that connect us to and translate a higher truth.

3 Sacrifice for humanity. It means to give of ourselves freely to help our fellow man.
